Meet our volunteers

Jenny

Hi,

My name is Jenny and I have volunteered with FugleAdvokatene since 2019. I work as a journalist and author. Previously, I volunteered and served on the board of Dyrebeskyttelsen Bergen. Today, my husband and I run an animal sanctuary.

It all started when I saw a Facebook post asking for rehabilitation homes. I had no experience with birds, but I love all animals, so I got in touch to see whether I could help. A lovely woman came to my home and gave me excellent training and support. Our newly renovated guest room was soon transformed into a rehabilitation room, with one patient following another.

Providing a rehabilitation home for wild birds is a little unusual, because you should not socialise with them. But I do not feel I need to cuddle an animal to care about it. For me, it is enough to know that I can help it become healthy and pain-free. It warms my heart to release a bird that was sick or injured and has fully recovered after rehabilitation.

Being a rehabilitation volunteer brings joy, but also sadness. Not every bird survives. That is hard, but it is also part of life. I feel strongly that every life is valuable. No one is in a hurry to die. Sadly, few people care about the life of an urban pigeon, which is why we need to care all the more.

What I really appreciate is how carefully everything is done at FugleAdvokatene. We work with some of the country’s most skilled avian veterinarians and are in touch with international experts. Our aim is to stay up to date with the latest knowledge. Every bird receives close medical follow-up, and our rehabilitation volunteers are incredibly dedicated and capable.

I am also proud that we care about our volunteers’ wellbeing. Hands-on animal welfare work is not always easy, but we are there for one another and offer support when it is needed.

FugleAdvokatene has given me a community of like-minded people and friends for life. I am so glad I got in touch after seeing that Facebook post, and I hope more people will join us in helping urban birds. Remember, there are many ways to contribute.
